The Cool Pool of the Week: Halekulani in Waikiki, Hawaii

Millennials heading to the Hawaiian nightlife capital of Waikiki might want to follow up a night of dancing with a cool, afternoon dip at one of the area’s most luxurious hotels.

Halekulani, a five-star luxury hotel located near Waikiki Beach, is home to the popular “Halekulani Pool,” often considered the highlight of the hotel.

Travel Agent was told it took about 18 months to build the 82-foot pool that includes 1.2 million pieces of blue tile to form a stunning work of art on the pool’s floor. It also took a full 24 hours and 97,000 gallons of water to fill. Also known as the “Orchid Pool,” this freshwater pool offers impressive views of the ocean and Diamond Head. There is a poolside menu here as well as the best Mai Tai at the hotel.

We were told Millennials often try to view the pool from every angle imaginable to capture the notable orchid mosaic. An Instagram tip for all: the higher one’s viewing point, the more visually appealing the orchid becomes.

Advisors should note that there are no activities inside the pool, but there is plenty of entertainment to be found near the pool. Millennials can experience a morning stretching class on the beach in front of the resort. Guests can also book time at SpaHalekulani, and indulge in traditional Polynesian and Hawaiian treatments or choose from the latest equipment at Halekulani’s fitness room, which is said to be one of the most extensive of all Waikiki Beach hotels.

Halekulani is a 453-room hotel located on five oceanfront acres on Waikiki Beach. Guest facilities include three restaurants, three cocktail lounges, pool, spa, fitness room, business center, hospitality suite, in-house laundry and dry cleaning facility, print shop, bakery, florist, and eight meeting and banquet rooms.

The original Halekulani was built in 1907 as a residential hotel called Hau Tree, owned by Robert Lewers. It consisted of a beachfront home and five bungalows. In 1917, the hotel was purchased and renamed Halekulani, which means “House Befitting Heaven” and gradually expanded into the established luxury resort it is today. Halekulani completed a property-wide renewal of all guest rooms and suites in June of 2012.

Halekulani is often considered a great option for honeymoon-bound Millennials,m but we think this is a great fit for all couples, couples retreats and guys’ and girls’ getaways.
