In the first six months of 2016, Estonia was visited by 60,610 Latvian tourists, 16% more than in the same period last year, Enterprise Estonia representative told BC.

In the first half-year, 7% of all foreign tourists in Estonia were Latvians, taking third place after tourists from Russia and Finland. From January to June the total number of tourists staying in Estonia for more than one night has increased 11%.

"The first half of 2016 has brought new records for Estonian tourism. We are always thrilled about the undying interest of our closest neighbors, which proves that despite the proximity, even neighbors see interesting and alluring reasons to visit us. Particular growth could be observed in the number of visiting families, taking interest in museums and theme parks. We are very pleased about Latvians rediscovering Parnu, where during the summer the main attraction for families with children is the Lottemaa Theme Park, while in the quiet season people who wish to relax visit the city's multiple SPA resorts," director of the Estonian Tourist Board Tarmo Mutso said.

Enterprise Estonia also indicated that Tallinn remains a popular destination for Latvian tourists with a 6% increase of Latvians who stay overnight, and so is the student city of Tartu with a 4% increase. Parnu, also known as Estonia's summer capital, experienced the most rapid increase of Latvian tourists, especially during the off season - fall, winter and early spring. The number of tourists in the first half-year, who also spent the night in Parnu, increased by 67% as compared to the same period last year. In addition, February and March experienced a twofold increase.
