The voluntary evacuation notice has been lifted for Tailoring and More in the Franklin Village Plaza.

The business may resume normal operations due to satisfactory air quality results, joining Franklin Nail and Spa and Franklin Cleaners who resumed normal operations last week.

Fritz and Friends and Village Boutique remain under a voluntary evacuation notice. Air quality testing at these businesses will continue over the next several days.

All businesses in the Franklin Village Plaza are required to use temporary air filtration devices 24 hours a day pending the installation of a permanent system. Air quality monitoring will continue in the coming months.

The mandatory evacuation was issued after a storage tank with Tetrachloroethylene (PCE) and petroleum by-products was discovered under the businesses at Franklin Village Plaza, 32716-32744 Franklin Road in Franklin. TCE and PCE are used in dry cleaning and metal degreasing and are likely present due to a previous dry cleaner and gas station that were on the property in the 1950s and 1970s. The current dry cleaner located in the plaza is neither responsible for the vapor intrusion nor do they conduct dry cleaning or store chemicals onsite.

At low levels over a long period of time, PCE may cause color vision loss and changes in mood, memory, attention, and reaction time. Exposure to PCE and TCE could lead to higher risk of getting certain types of cancer and birth defects.

Michigan Department of Environmental Quality will continue collecting soil, groundwater, and vapor samples at this location and neighboring parcels over the next six months, conducting additional mitigation and remediation as needed.
