A famous Yorkshire hotel has revealed plans for a major £2.5m renovation of its spa and wellness facilities.

The Grand, in York city centre, will see the transformation work take place between May and December. Once complete, it is aimed that state-of-the-art amenities will elevate the spa experience.

The Grand’s existing spa will be completely reimagined, incorporating cutting-edge wellness technology, new treatment rooms, and expanded relaxation areas. Plans include the introduction of a Tirol hot sauna, a Himalayan salt sauna, a hydrotherapy pool, foot spas, and tranquil relaxation rooms. Additionally, a dedicated restaurant area will be created, providing spa day guests with a luxurious space to enjoy refreshments and unwind.

Emma Sorby, spa director at the Grand, York, said: “We are reimagining what a luxury city centre spa can be – a holistic wellness sanctuary that connects guests with the latest in relaxation and rejuvenation all whilst in the heart of York city centre. By introducing a new variation of thermal offerings and elevated experiences, we will allow guests to break away from the hustle and bustle of the city. Despite the temporary closure of the spa for the refurbishment, The Grand’s skilled therapists will continue to offer indulgent Elemis treatments in an alternative setting, ensuring guests can still enjoy premium pampering during the transition. The team will also be offering in-room gym kits, Grand running routes and use of Grand bicycles enabling guests to still enjoy wellbeing activities during their stay.

Adam Dyke, general manager at the Grand, York, added: “This transformation marks an exciting new chapter for The Grand, York, reaffirming our dedication to providing world-class luxury experiences. As we embark on this significant renovation to become the UK’s most loved city centre hotel spa, we are investing in the future of wellness hospitality in the city we call home, ensuring our guests have access to the very best in relaxation and rejuvenation, as well as creating opportunities for the local community. The new spa will not only enhance our offering but also set a new benchmark for urban wellness in the UK. We look forward to welcoming guests to a truly reimagined space that blends innovation, tranquillity, and indulgence in the heart of York.”

During this refurbishment, the Grand will transform two bedrooms into treatment rooms, and skilled therapists will still offer an abundance of indulgent elemis treatments to work away tension, deeply cleanse and leave guests feeling relaxed and rejuvenated.

It is expected the completely renovated spa will welcome guests from the start of the 2026.
